Wool, Rabbit & Beaver. What’s the difference?

A commonly asked question is.. what is the difference in Wool, RabbitBeaver & Rabbit+Beaver Blended felts? Which one is best for me and my needs?

Wool Felts, being the cheapest of the three felt materials, are sheered from sheep and is not nearly as durable as Rabbit and Beaver. With a shorter lifespan, wool isn’t considered a luxury material in the hat space but is great for minimal wear at a more affordable price.

Rabbit Fur Felts are considered a luxurious hat making material. The fur is not sheered and instead, constructed by removing fur from pelts. With natural oils found in the fur felts, this material is durable and fantastic for hat making with minimal differences from Beaver aside from the actual feel of the felt. A great choice to get more eccentric color choices!

Rabbit+Beaver Blends are 50% Rabbit and 50% Beaver fur blended together by combining large and small fibers. By doing this, it is easier to create the texture desired to obtain different grades of fur and also achieve different dying colors while still having the water resistant qualities of a Beaver felt.

Beaver Felts are used to make the most luxurious hats on the market. With the highest oil content out of all felts, Beaver is the most water resistant and naturally softest to the touch with a more buttery feel. This quality of felt hat is superior in it’s resilience and great for long term outdoor wear for decades to come.
